1 c Sugar Peeled
1/4 c Shortening 1/4 c Walnuts — chopped
1 ea Egg — lightly beaten VANlLLA SAUCE:
1 c All-purpose flour 1 c Sugar
1 ts Baking soda 2 tb Cornstarch
1/2 ts Ground cinnamon 1/2 c Light cream
1/4 ts Salt 1/2 c Butter or margarine
2 c Apples — tart shredded 1 1/2 ts Vanilla extract
In a mixing bowl, cream sugar and shortening. Add egg and mix well.
Add the dry ingredients; mix well. Fold in the apples and walnuts.
Spread in a greased 8-in. square baking pan. Bake at 350 deg. for
35-40 minutes or until cake tests done. For sauce, combine sugar,
cornstarch and cream in a saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat;
boil for 2 minutes. Remove from the heat. Add butter and vanilla;
stir until butter is melted. Serve warm over warm cake. Yield: 9
